President of the United States

The office of President of the United States was set up by the Founding Fathers in 1789 with George Washington being appointed President. The President is the head of the Executive branch of the government. If the President is not upholding his promise to work "for the people," the House of Representatives have the power to impeach the President. However he can only be removed from office if the Senate agrees with the House of Representatives regarding impeachment.

The President is the head of the Executive branch of government, he is also commander-in-chief of the Military forces. The President has the power to suggest to Congress that there is a need to declare war on another country. The Congress must approve his declaration before America can go to war. However if a "state of war" action is initiated against the United States, acting in defense of the Country, the President has the power to send troops to battle. As per the Constitution, Congress can declare war without the Presidents approval, but the Senate and House of Representatives must both approve of the declaration of war before war can be declared by Congress.

The President has power over the Supreme Court and nominates the federal judges. The Senate has to approve the Presidents appointments.

The President, with approval from the Senate, can make treaties with other countries. He can also pardon criminals and offer clemencies for federal crimes.

The President gives the State of Union Address every January.

Article I of the Constitution gives the President the power to veto a bill that is submitted by congress. He can not veto parts of the bill. He must veto the whole bill. A bill must be signed by the President before it can become a law.

The Judicial branch, which also includes the Supreme Court, may declare actions of the President unconstitutional which protects the people from a President who is corrupt. The President of the United States never has complete powerove the country, he can try to hide under executive power but if he has not behaved ethically, executive power will not protect him.

The President of the United States must be a natural born citizen, at least thirty-five years old and made the United States his residence for fourteen years.

The President of the United States is not directly elected by popular vote. Every four years the members of the Electoral College vote for the President. He can serve two four-year terms.

President of the United States is a very important office. However the way the government system in the United States of America is set up he can never have complete control of the country. He has to answer to the Senate and Congress.
